At least 23 suspected bandits were killed following a precision airstrike by the Nigerian military on armed groups fleeing Kano State after attacks on Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas. The attacks occurred on the night of January 1 and into the early hours of January 2, 2026, but were contained by troops of the Joint Task Force in Kano State, who inflicted significant losses on the assailants.

In a statement issued on January 3, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Major Babatunde Zubairu, disclosed that the fleeing bandits were tracked to Karaduwa village in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. Acting on credible intelligence, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA conducted a targeted airstrike at Dan Marke, where the bandits had reportedly regrouped.

The operation, supported by Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions, led to the neutralisation of at least 23 terrorists, with several others injured. Weapons and equipment belonging to the group were also destroyed.

The Commander of 3 Brigade commended the air and ground forces for their professionalism and bravery, assuring residents that security in Kano State remains stable, with troops sustaining aggressive patrols. The Army further called on the public to continue providing timely information to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
