Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has attributed his restraint in taking decisive actions to his deep appreciation for his political benefactor. This statement was made in response to accusations of ingratitude amidst the ongoing crisis between him and the former governor of the state, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
During a meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor Fubara addressed stakeholders of the Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality, including the leadership of the Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation Worldwide and the Supreme Council of Ikwerre Traditional Rulers. The Ikwerre Ethnic Group, comprising the local government areas of Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor, Emohua, and Ikwerre, is the ethnic group to which Wike belongs.
Governor Fubara assured the stakeholders that, despite the political turmoil in the state, he remains committed to maintaining decorum and respecting individuals for who they are. He emphasized his continued respect for his political benefactor, suggesting that this respect has been a guiding principle in his actions.
This declaration came on the heels of the swearing-in of Barrister Emmanuel Frank-Fubara as a commissioner, following his screening and confirmation by the assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House in Port Harcourt around 5 pm on Monday.
In his address post the oath-taking ceremony, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his support for the Oko-Jumbo-led assembly, asserting its legitimacy as the lawfully recognized legislative body in the state. He defended his decision to recognize this assembly amidst ongoing political disputes.
Governor Fubara also voiced his frustration with the police's handling of a recent bomb explosion in Port Harcourt. He criticized the authorities for their perceived inaction and silence regarding the incident, suggesting that the lack of progress in the investigation was due to the suspects not being his supporters.
"I’ve not been hearing anything and I’m wondering, after how many weeks now, the Nigeria police are still not able to come out and make a statement about the attempt by someone – who I don’t know what his name is – tried to detonate dynamite in front of Hotel Presidential," Fubara stated.
He further expressed his bewilderment at the authorities' lack of response, implying a double standard in the treatment of incidents involving his supporters compared to others. "I’m still wondering why it doesn’t happen. But if it’s maybe any other thing that has to do with us, they will say they should even charge the person for terrorism,” he added.
Governor Fubara’s comments highlight the ongoing tensions and complexities within the political landscape of Rivers State, as well as his commitment to navigating these challenges with respect and caution
