Security operatives in Edo State have arrested several individuals alleged to be thugs sponsored by the All Progressives Congress (APC). These individuals were reportedly caught attempting to smuggle guns and other weapons into the state ahead of the upcoming off-cycle governorship election scheduled for September 21st, 2024.

Arrest of Suspected APC Thugs

A video shared by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle late Friday night captured the arrest of the suspects. The video shows security officers stopping a Sienna vehicle and recovering firearms and other illegal materials. The voices in the background of the video accuse the apprehended individuals of being sent by the APC to disrupt the election.

The accompanying post from the PDP reads:
“Security Operatives and the people of Edo State apprehend @OfficialAPCNg thugs trying to smuggle guns into Edo State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. We salute the courage of the Edo people in their determination to ensure that only the will of the people prevails.”

APC Yet to Respond

At the time of filing this report, the APC had not yet issued any statement or responded to the allegations and the video. The political atmosphere in Edo State remains tense as voters prepare to choose their next governor. The three leading candidates in the election are Asue Ighodalo of the PDP, Monday Okpebholo of the APC, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).

Public Reaction to the Incident

The arrest has sparked significant public outrage, with many Nigerians expressing frustration with the APC. Social media has been flooded with comments condemning the party, accusing it of fostering violence and bringing hardship to the country. Critics have gone as far as to describe APC leadership as the worst in Nigeria's history, claiming that the party’s policies have led to widespread suffering.

Some commenters, including women and men from various walks of life, have vowed that those responsible for Nigeria’s current state, including any thugs involved in election violence, will face divine retribution.

The governorship election in Edo State is expected to be closely contested, and the actions of security forces in maintaining peace and order will be crucial in ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process
