In a significant diplomatic development, the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Simon Ekpa, announced that members of the BRGIE cabinet recently held meetings with key U.S. lawmakers, including Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Congressman Mike Johnson, and Congressman Jeff Van Drew.

Ekpa made this known through a series of posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, September 12, 2024. These meetings, aimed at advancing the cause of Biafran liberation, are seen as a crucial step in garnering international support for the movement.

Focus of the Meetings: Biafra Liberation and Marginalization

According to Ekpa, the BRGIE delegation, led by Minister of Finance Ogechukwu Nkere, engaged in a productive discussion with Speaker Mike Johnson on a range of topics concerning the Biafran-American community, Biafra’s self-determination, and the alleged marginalization of Biafrans by the Nigerian government.

In his statement, Ekpa emphasized the importance of the self-referendum for Biafran independence, which was also a focal point of the discussion. The Nigerian government's treatment of the Biafran people, a longstanding grievance among proponents of the Biafran cause, was brought to the attention of the U.S. lawmakers.

Support from U.S. Lawmakers for Biafran Agitation

Ekpa further claimed that Speaker Johnson expressed interest and sympathy for Biafra’s quest for self-rule. This, he noted, marks a historic moment in the Biafran struggle, as it is the first time that the issue of Biafran independence has been addressed at such a high level within the U.S. government.

"The outcome of these meetings will significantly contribute to the realization of Biafran liberation," Ekpa stated, adding that the declaration of Biafran independence, scheduled for December 2, 2024, has already garnered considerable attention across the U.S.

A Historic Milestone in Biafran Diplomacy

Ekpa highlighted the historic nature of the meetings, describing them as unprecedented in the history of the Biafran movement. In recognition of the occasion, Speaker Johnson reportedly presented Nkere with a commemorative gift bearing the official insignia of the Speaker of the House.

“This is truly historic, as never before has the Biafran issue been presented at such a high level,” Ekpa declared.

December 2024: A Pivotal Date for Biafran Independence

As December 2, 2024, approaches, the BRGIE remains steadfast in its commitment to declaring Biafran independence. However, the Nigerian government has consistently opposed these efforts and is reportedly making moves to secure Ekpa’s repatriation from Finland, where he resides.

Despite the challenges posed by the Nigerian government, Ekpa and the BRGIE are optimistic that the support they have garnered from U.S. lawmakers will be instrumental in advancing the cause of Biafran self-determination on the international stage.
