Salihu Lukman: A Strong Critic of the Current Administration

Salihu Lukman, former Vice-Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North-West region, has made a bold prediction regarding President Bola Tinubu's political future. According to Lukman, Nigerians will not reelect Tinubu in 2027. Speaking on a popular Channels Television program, Politics Today, Lukman stated his firm belief that the current trajectory of the administration will lead to its defeat.

Lukman's remarks come shortly after the APC accused him of engaging in “opportunistic politicking.” Despite this, the former Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) maintained his critical stance, warning of the political consequences Tinubu could face in the next election.

Echoes of History: Drawing Parallels to the Past

During the interview, Lukman drew a historical comparison between the present political climate and the nation's past struggle to end military rule. He suggested that the same energy and resolve Nigerians used to oust the military could be applied to remove Tinubu from office.

"I guarantee you, and I am confident," Lukman declared. "Just as we were able to get the military out of power, we are going to correct the current mess. By 2027, APC and President Asiwaju will be defeated, and we will produce leaders who serve the people, not leaders who behave like emperors."

A Critique of APC's Handling of Insecurity

Lukman did not stop at criticizing leadership style; he also took aim at the APC's handling of Nigeria's security challenges. He highlighted how the party's failure to deliver on its 2015 campaign promises, particularly regarding security, has disillusioned many Nigerians.

"In 2015, the focus was on Boko Haram," Lukman noted. "Now, the insecurity has expanded into widespread banditry in the North-West and North-Central regions. Things have deteriorated. I wish security agencies would release statistics on how many people have been killed or kidnapped. From 2015 to now, insecurity has worsened."

Insecurity Spreading Beyond the North

Lukman expressed concern that insecurity, once largely confined to specific regions, has now spread further south. This growing instability, he said, is evidence that the situation has escalated beyond what was initially promised during the APC’s 2015 campaign. Cattle rustling has morphed into rampant banditry, creating widespread insecurity across Nigeria.

Calls for Opposition Unity

Despite the internal struggles within opposition parties, Lukman urged these groups to unify in response to the challenges posed by the current government. He emphasized the need for a coalition that could present a credible alternative in the 2027 elections.

"Despite the divisions, the opposition must come together to face this challenge," he said, underscoring the importance of a united front if they hope to offer a viable alternative to the electorate.

Conclusion: A Call for Change in 2027

Salihu Lukman’s statements reflect a growing dissatisfaction with the current administration, particularly in areas like security and leadership style. His prediction of Tinubu’s defeat in 2027 speaks to a larger narrative of Nigerians seeking change, rejecting any form of "emperor-like" leadership, and demanding a government that is responsive to the needs of its citizens.

As Nigeria approaches its next electoral cycle, Lukman's views may resonate with a populace increasingly disillusioned with the status quo, setting the stage for what could be a highly contested election
