The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF), a coalition encompassing nearly 50 youth organizations from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called for the immediate dismissal and arrest of Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The group expressed grave concerns over what they perceive as a direct threat to democracy and national stability stemming from Wike’s recent public statements.

In a detailed statement, the NYLF highlighted their alarm following a public declaration made by Barrister Wike on August 31, 2024, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. During the event, Wike threatened to incite crises in states governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), allegedly in retaliation for PDP governors’ support of a fellow governor amid the ongoing political unrest in Rivers State. The NYLF views Wike's comments as a severe provocation that undermines democratic principles and could potentially lead to widespread chaos.

The NYLF’s statement emphasized that the Minister’s remarks are not just a mere expression of personal grievances but rather a dangerous incitement that could destabilize the entire nation. “The statements made by the FCT Minister, Barr. Wike, are grave and dangerous. They are viewed by the Northern Youth as a call for anarchy, a threat to democracy, highly provocative, and an invitation to chaos that may completely erase whatever gains the democratic dispensation has achieved or recorded,” the statement read. The group further warned that such rhetoric threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s national cohesion, unity, and progress.

One of the most troubling aspects, according to the NYLF, is the apparent inaction from the Federal Government and security agencies in response to Wike's inflammatory comments. The group expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of accountability and enforcement of the rule of law, which they argue could erode public trust in the current administration. “The Northern Youth are concerned with the silence and inaction of the Federal Government and the Security Agencies, who have turned a deaf ear and blind eye to these inimical, ruthless, arrogant, proud, boastful, and irresponsible utterances of Barr. Wike,” the statement continued. The NYLF contends that such complacency could embolden other political figures to engage in similarly destructive behavior, ultimately jeopardizing the nation's democratic framework.

In a statement titled "ARREST NYESOM WIKE NOW," the NYLF made several unequivocal demands. Foremost among these is the immediate arrest of Barrister Wike. The group insists that Wike should be compelled to sign a legally binding undertaking, committing to refrain from any actions that could incite further crises. “We demand that the Federal Government direct the Security Agencies to arrest Barr. Wike and have him sign an undertaking that he will not in any way initiate or carry out his threat and that he will be held responsible for any crisis in the PDP-controlled states,” the statement asserted. The NYLF also warned that failure to take such actions could lead to the perception that the Federal Government is complicit in, or even supportive of, Wike’s controversial stance.

Beyond demanding Wike’s arrest, the NYLF has also called for his immediate removal from the Federal Executive Council. They argue that his continued presence in a key government position is untenable given the severity of his remarks and the potential consequences for national security. Additionally, the group urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take swift and decisive action against Wike. They recommended that the PDP suspend Wike indefinitely and prohibit him from participating in any party activities at all levels. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should, as a matter of necessity and urgency, suspend Barr. Wike indefinitely and ban him from convening or attending party meetings at all levels,” the NYLF stated.

In a show of solidarity, the NYLF reiterated its unwavering support for the PDP Governors Forum, led by Senator Bala Mohammed, and pledged to back the forum’s efforts to address the crisis within the confines of the law. “Consequently, we want to categorically state that the Northern Youth are strongly and firmly behind the Senator Bala Mohammed-led PDP Governors Forum as far as this matter is concerned and will do everything humanly possible within the confines of the law to support the Forum in any capacity or form,” the group declared. The NYLF also voiced its full support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and other stakeholders in the region, particularly their Ijaw counterparts, in navigating the current political turmoil.

This strong stance by the Northern Youth Leaders Forum underscores the deepening divisions within Nigeria’s political landscape and highlights the potential for escalating tensions if decisive action is not taken. The NYLF’s demands reflect a broader concern about the preservation of democratic principles and the need for accountability at all levels of government. As the situation continues to unfold, the response of the Federal Government and the PDP will likely be scrutinized closely by both political observers and the general public
