Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on his recent visit to former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), at his residence in Minna, Niger State. In a statement issued from Abeokuta on Sunday, Obasanjo explained the nature of his visit, addressing public speculation about the purpose of the closed-door meeting.

The High-Profile Gathering

Reports from Daily Trust indicated that the meeting brought together four of Nigeria’s elder statesmen: Obasanjo, former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and General Aliyu Gusau, who all visited IBB at his Hill Top residence in Minna. The visit attracted considerable attention, especially in light of the current economic challenges facing the country.

According to a source familiar with the meeting, the discussions lasted about an hour and occurred behind closed doors. The source, however, was not willing to confirm the specifics of the conversation but hinted that it may have touched upon pressing national issues.

"The meeting might not be unconnected with national issues, especially the current hardship being faced by Nigerians," the source noted. "But I cannot confirm the details of what was discussed."

Obasanjo’s Arrival in Minna

Obasanjo’s visit to Minna was marked by his arrival at the Minna International Airport at approximately 4:30 pm on Sunday. He traveled in a Gulfstream 5 aircraft and was accompanied by a group of 10 people. Upon arrival, he proceeded directly to General Babangida’s residence, where he was joined by Generals Abdulsalami and Gusau. After the meeting, Obasanjo departed Minna at around 6:20 pm.

While the purpose of the visit raised speculation due to the notable figures involved, Obasanjo later clarified the reasons behind his journey.

A Visit to Celebrate IBB’s Birthday

In an official statement issued by his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo clarified that the visit to Babangida was to celebrate the former leader’s 83rd birthday, which occurred on August 17. Obasanjo expressed that his busy international schedule had prevented him from visiting earlier in the month.

“President Obasanjo proceeded to Minna to visit President Ibrahim Babangida, who celebrated his 83rd birthday on August 17. He noted Babangida’s contributions to the country and expressed joy at his good health,” the statement read.

A Day of Celebrations

Before heading to Minna, Obasanjo also made a stop in Benin, Edo State, to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion. His day of visits, therefore, was focused on paying homage to respected figures in Nigerian society, acknowledging their significant contributions to the nation.

In his remarks, Obasanjo prayed for continued health and well-being for both IBB and Chief Igbinedion, underscoring the importance of unity and mutual respect among Nigeria’s elder statesmen
