Kenya’s political landscape is witnessing heightened tensions as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces an impending impeachment vote in parliament. The accusations against Gachagua, centering on corruption and undermining government efforts, have revealed a deepening rift within the ruling party.

Allegations of Corruption and Political Misconduct

Deputy President Gachagua, aged 59, is accused of a range of offenses, including corruption, promoting ethnically divisive politics, and undermining the government led by President William Ruto. Lawmakers pushing for the impeachment claim that Gachagua’s actions are detrimental to national unity and governance. His role as a prominent businessman from the Kikuyu tribe, Kenya’s largest ethnic group, adds further complexity to the accusations, given his influence in the political and economic spheres.

Despite the serious charges, Gachagua has vehemently denied all accusations, labeling them as “outrageous” and “sheer propaganda.” In a press conference on Monday, he suggested that the impeachment push is part of a broader scheme to remove him from office, dismissing the claims as a politically motivated witch hunt.

Political Tensions and Internal Rifts

The impeachment vote follows weeks of mounting political tension between Gachagua and President Ruto. While Gachagua was a key figure in Ruto's successful campaign in the closely contested August 2022 election, the relationship between the two has soured in recent months. Gachagua has expressed frustration over being sidelined in government decision-making processes, which some interpret as a sign of growing discord within the ruling administration.

One of the most significant points of contention between the two leaders has been the wave of youth-led protests that erupted in June over unpopular tax increases. These demonstrations, some of which turned deadly, have further exposed the internal divisions within the ruling coalition. Gachagua is accused of lending support to the protests, with several MPs aligned with him being summoned by police in recent weeks. The MPs were accused of financially backing the demonstrations, further intensifying the political crisis.

Impeachment Vote and Future Uncertainty

The upcoming parliamentary vote on Gachagua's impeachment is expected to deepen the political divide within Kenya’s government. If successful, it could significantly alter the political landscape, weakening the administration's hold on power and leading to further instability. However, Gachagua remains defiant, confident that the impeachment efforts will fail and that he will continue serving as Deputy President.

As the vote approaches, the nation remains on edge, with both supporters and critics of Gachagua watching closely to see how the political drama unfolds. The outcome will likely have far-reaching implications not only for Gachagua’s political future but also for the stability of the ruling party and the broader governance of Kenya.
