The Citizens Justice Organization has called on the Federal Government to demonstrate sensitivity to the concerns of citizens while maintaining impartiality in its actions, especially regarding national security. In light of recent statements by notable individuals such as Asari Dokubo, the organization stresses the importance of transparency and the need for the government to maintain public trust in its handling of critical security matters.

Dokubo's Controversial Claims and Government Response

Asari Dokubo, a former Niger Delta militant, recently made provocative claims during the Rivers State local government elections, alleging that military aircraft were flying over his residence. He suggested that he had the capability to bring down such aircraft, stating, “The federal government knows that I have the capacity to bring down any aircraft.”

In response, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, dismissed Dokubo’s claims as "laughable," emphasizing that the former militant does not possess the capacity to challenge the military. General Buba assured the public that military aircraft are used strictly for national security operations, all conducted within the bounds of the law in a democratic setting.

Upholding the Rule of Law and Managing Public Perception

The Federal Government must ensure that comments like Dokubo's are handled within the framework of the rule of law, to avoid escalating tensions. Clear and consistent communication from government officials is crucial, especially when explaining the purpose of military operations. This transparency can prevent any perception of targeted surveillance during sensitive times such as elections, which can otherwise lead to public distrust and fuel unnecessary controversy.

Addressing Security Concerns and Clarifying Roles

In addition to responding to Dokubo’s statements, Major General Buba addressed public concerns about a recent security incident involving the escape of 13 repentant Boko Haram terrorists from a rehabilitation facility. Some of these escapees were reportedly armed with rifles. Buba clarified that the military is not directly involved in the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRRR) program, which is managed by other relevant authorities. This clarification is essential to avoid confusion about responsibilities, ensuring that the military is not wrongly blamed for incidents outside its direct control.

Progress in Counterterrorism Efforts

Despite these recent challenges, the military continues to achieve significant success in the fight against terrorism. General Buba highlighted the neutralization of over 300 terrorist commanders in the North West region as part of “Operation Fasan Yamma.” This operation has resulted in several high-profile terrorists being eliminated, and many others are now reportedly considering surrender.

Preventing Future Controversy through Transparent Governance

To prevent future controversies and maintain public confidence, the Federal Government must continue to act with impartiality and transparency. Respect for the concerns of all citizens, coupled with clear communication and a commitment to lawful operations, will help avoid misunderstandings that may lead to provocative statements from public figures like Asari Dokubo. Effective governance, built on respect for citizens' rights and open communication, is essential to preserving national unity and fostering trust in government institutions

From the video played, Asari did not say Nigerian military. He said, Wike's soldiers, Wike's police. He went further to say Nigeria cannot surrender to Wike which to my understanding is that the Nigeria military cannot surrender to Wike's soldiers. It is the Nigerian military that is now presenting themselves as Wike's soldiers. Very unfortunate.
