The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is experiencing an intensifying internal conflict, as Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, the factional Acting National Chairman, has openly defied a court order by resuming leadership of the party. This development has added to the growing crisis within the PDP, raising concerns about its future stability.
Defiance of Court Ruling
In a controversial move, Ahmed Yayari Mohammed has disregarded a court ruling that affirmed Ambassador Umar Damagum as the rightful Acting National Chairman of the PDP until December 2025. Despite this legal decision, Mohammed has assumed leadership and is making preparations for the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for October 24, 2024. His defiance of the court order has further escalated tensions within the party.
Escalating Internal Crisis
The leadership struggle has intensified the already fragile situation within the PDP. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party has been plagued by suspensions and counter-suspensions, leading to a widening rift among its key members. These internal disputes have not only disrupted party operations but have also caused uncertainty regarding the PDP's ability to function cohesively in the near future.
Voices of Concern
Amidst the escalating crisis, prominent voices within the party are expressing deep concern. Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has openly lamented the deteriorating state of the PDP. According to Fayose, the party is on the brink of collapse, and its recovery seems increasingly uncertain. He emphasized that only divine intervention could save the PDP from total disintegration.
The Road Ahead
As the PDP grapples with these internal challenges, the future of the party remains uncertain. With factional leaders defying court rulings and suspensions continuing to divide the party’s leadership, the crisis threatens to undermine the PDP’s position as a major political force. Whether the party can resolve its internal conflicts and restore unity remains to be seen, but the coming weeks will likely prove critical for its future trajectory
