LG Poll: Fubara Acknowledges Political Setback but Stresses Commitment to Democracy

Governor Fubara's View on the Local Government Elections

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed that he sees himself as the greatest loser in the forthcoming local government elections, owing to the fact that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not be participating in the polls. This, according to Fubara, presents a significant political disadvantage, yet he remains committed to ensuring the process goes ahead for the sake of democratic governance.

Despite the setback, the Governor emphasized his administration's resolve to support the development of a sustainable democracy, adding that his government will not tolerate any attempts to create confusion or instability during the election process.

Call for Voter Participation

Governor Fubara urged registered voters and political leaders to actively participate in the elections, scheduled for October 5, 2024, across the 23 local government councils in Rivers State. He called on voters to show up at their polling units and fulfill their civic responsibility in ushering in new political leadership.

Addressing political stakeholders at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Governor outlined his administration's commitment to the electoral process. His remarks were captured in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, where Fubara reiterated that the elections would proceed and conclude as planned.

Commitment to a Lawful Electoral Process

Fubara underscored that only registered voters in Rivers State would be allowed to participate in the local government elections. He highlighted the need for all participants to strictly adhere to the legal guidelines laid out by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). The Governor emphasized that his administration would follow due process to ensure a successful and peaceful election.

"Go, do what the law says you should do, as demanded by the RSIEC Law, and leave the rest," Fubara stated. "RSIEC will take it from there, and when they finish their part, the government will complete the process, all by the special grace of God in the coming days."

Reflecting on PDP’s Absence from the Polls

Fubara openly acknowledged the political disadvantage his party faces by not participating in the elections. He pointed out that the Supreme Court ruling, which mandated that local government affairs must be managed by elected officials, compelled him to proceed with the elections despite the PDP’s non-participation.

"You know this election, I am the greatest loser because my party is not participating. It is the truth! But because of the Supreme Court ruling, I have to comply as the Governor," Fubara remarked.

He further explained that following the court ruling, President Bola Tinubu engaged state governors in discussions, and a compliance window of 90 days was agreed upon to conduct the elections.

Appreciation for Party Loyalists

Despite the challenges, Governor Fubara expressed gratitude to PDP members and other stakeholders for their unwavering support. He commended them for upholding democratic principles and the rule of law, noting that their solidarity was essential to maintaining stability in Rivers State.

"A good number of you here are my party faithful, and though you are not directly benefiting from this election, you are here supporting us. I thank you for standing with us," the Governor said.

Appeal for a Peaceful Process

As the elections draw near, Fubara called on all participants to remain law-abiding and avoid any form of violence or disruption. He urged stakeholders to reject misinformation and resist any attempts to destabilize the state.

"I want to assure you that with your strength, we will continue to stand tall, and we will not let the flag of Rivers State fall. Do not allow any propaganda or any movement to deter your spirit," Fubara concluded.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process and maintaining peace and stability in the state.
