The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has expressed its firm resolve to prevent any individual or group from disrupting the upcoming Rivers State local government election, scheduled for Saturday, October 5th.

Ijaw Youths Stand Firm on Election Stability

During a press conference held on Thursday in Port Harcourt, IYC President Dr. Theophilus Alaye emphasized the council’s commitment to safeguarding the election process. He highlighted the significance of Governor Siminilayi Fubara's decision to conduct the local government election, describing it as a crucial step towards ensuring that grassroots governance is fully operational to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

“As Ijaw youths, we won’t allow any individual or group of persons to disrupt the upcoming local government elections,” Dr. Alaye stated, reinforcing the council's determination.

Protecting the Leadership of Governor Fubara

The IYC President expressed strong support for Governor Fubara, urging respect for his leadership. He underscored the vital role the Ijaw people play in the nation's economic sustenance, and how this reinforces their right to protect the stability of governance in the state.

“We, the Ijaw people, are laying the golden eggs that feed this country, and we won’t allow anyone to disrespect our humble and peaceful son, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” Dr. Alaye stated. He also voiced concerns over recent judicial rulings that appear to obstruct the electoral process, calling them "unfortunate" and destabilizing.

Call for Judicial Impartiality and INEC’s Independence

Dr. Alaye took the opportunity to express concern about the conflicting judgments issued by courts of coordinate jurisdiction, which have caused confusion around the conduct of the elections. He described these rulings as regrettable and detrimental to the democratic process.

“We advise eminent judges to remain impartial when adjudicating sensitive issues of this magnitude and avoid falling into the hands of politicians who seek to create chaos and confusion,” Alaye urged. He pointed out that no previous court rulings have ever halted national or state elections, and the local government election should not be treated differently.

The IYC also directed a plea to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging the electoral body to remain independent and fulfill its constitutional mandate. The council called on INEC to release all necessary information and resources to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to ensure a credible and transparent election.

“In carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, INEC must not allow itself to be used as an enemy of the people and democracy,” Dr. Alaye warned.

Conclusion

The IYC’s statement reflects a firm commitment to protecting the integrity of the upcoming Rivers State local government election. The council remains resolute in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process, calling for judicial neutrality and electoral independence to maintain the state's democratic structure
