The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the continuous detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, declaring that there is no justifiable reason for the federal government to keep him in custody. Speaking on the matter, Obi asserted that if he is elected as the President of Nigeria, his administration would ensure the immediate release of the secessionist agitator, describing the current situation as one that lacks logical reasoning.

Obi emphasized that the persistent incarceration of Kanu has done little to address the core socio-political challenges facing the nation, particularly in the Southeast region. According to him, Kanu has not committed any offense that warrants the prolonged legal standoff and state-sanctioned detention he is currently enduring. The former Anambra State governor maintained that a governance approach built on dialogue, justice, and adherence to the rule of law is vital for restoring national unity and peace, rather than the heavy-handed use of state power against agitators.

The Labour Party flagbearer further argued that the issues driving regional agitations across Nigeria are deeply rooted in systemic injustice, economic marginalization, and poor governance. He noted that instead of suppressing voices through detention, a responsible government should focus on addressing the underlying grievances of the citizens. Obi reiterated that his incoming administration would prioritize inclusive governance and dialogue, making the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu a critical step toward healing regional fractures and fostering national cohesion.
