ASUU Niger Delta University Chapter Marks 5th Day of Indefinite Strike Action

​The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Niger Delta University (NDU) chapter, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, has officially reached the 5th day of its indefinite strike action, reiterating its firm resolve to withhold labor until key financial and welfare demands are met.

​Gathered in solidarity in front of the NDU Chapel, union members held signs demanding "Justice Now," "Fair Pay," "Respect Academics," and "University Not Neglect." In a unified stance, members emphasize that the industrial action is a fight for justice, fairness, dignity, and the future of higher education in the institution.

​Core Demands of the Union

​The NDU chapter of ASUU has outlined three non-negotiable demands driving the ongoing strike:

• ​Payment of Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance: Immediate disbursement of the necessary allowances required to support academic instruction and research operations.
• ​Full Payment of Arrears (From January 2026): Settlement of all outstanding arrears owed for the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance accumulated since January 2026.
• ​Payment of 19 Months Wage Award Arrears: Full liquidation of the 19 months of accumulated arrears associated with the 25%–35% wage award increment.

​The union leadership maintains that teaching, research, and community service—the core pillars of the university system—cannot effectively thrive under conditions of neglect and unpaid entitlements. ASUU NDU calls on students, stakeholders, and the general public to support the strike, reaffirming that solidarity will ensure a better, more sustainable university system.
